Seoul Studio Abroad | Spring 2023

The Howard A. Silverstein and Patricia Bleznak Silverstein Photography Studio Abroad

Instructors: Jamie Diamond & Gabriel Martinez

The Fine Arts Department is pleased to announce the Spring 2023 Howard A. Silverstein and Patricia Bleznak Silverstein Photography Studio Abroad with travel to Seoul, Korea. This semester-long studio will spend approximately 15 days abroad with travel and lodging expenses included (during Spring Break and the week following), allowing students to explore Seoul as site of inquiry, providing ample subject matter for student research, cross-cultural visual investigation, and exploration of South Korea’s contemporary cultural and social climate. The course will culminate in an on-campus exhibition and publication.

South Korea, a peninsula in the northeastern area of the Asian continent, has an extensive and rich history, proud tradition, and vibrant culture. Seoul, the capital city, is the country’s largest metropolis, with a population of almost 10 million inhabitants and a population density almost twice of New York City. Home to five UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the city is steeped in history. Sited between China and Japan, Korean culture developed agonistically between these two powerful nations. During the age of Western imperialism in East Asian, western precepts of modernity were absorbed and negotiated with a distinct Korean character.

Despite its humble size (comparable to the state of Indiana) South Korea has one of the world’s largest economies (4th in Asia, 10th in the world), is a member of the OECD and the G-20 and continues to be one of the fastest growing developed countries in the world. Korean innovation and distinct character within the realms of technology, entertainment, and art are highly regarded internationally. The culinary, fashion, and pop-culture scenes are thrilling, modern and energetic while deeply rooted in tradition. Seoul’s contemporary art scene is thriving and attracting international attention. It boasts over 100 art museums nationwide, is home to a growing global gallery scene and has become a creative magnet for art fairs. In the 20th and 21st centuries, Korea birthed some of the most prominent artists and photographers recognized today.

This course is made possible by the Howard A. Silverstein and Patricia Bleznak Silverstein Photography Studio Abroad fund.
