Founded in 2006 in memory of Philadelphia's iconic 20th-century city planner, Edmund N. Bacon [1910-2005], this annual program honors both professionals and students whose work epitomizes excellence in urban design. The winner of our student urban design competition is honored with the Edmund N. Bacon Student Urban Design Award. The student design competition attracts undergraduate and graduate students from around the globe and the competition focuses on an area or location in Philadelphia. Students are encouraged to form multidisciplinary teams that include student architects, landscape architects, civil engineers, planners, environmental engineers, and economists, to address the myriad real-world issues facing any redevelopment project.
This year the subject matter is centered on “Envisioning a Thriving Historic 7th Ward”. Philadelphia's 7th Ward, which was once the heart of Black Philadelphia, was a historically significant African American community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This area stood as a significant community, flourishing with thriving businesses, schools, churches, and serving as a vibrant cultural epicenter and a catalyst for political activism. However, the 7th Ward's vibrancy was disrupted by areas of concentrated poverty, coordinated disenfranchisement, discriminatory housing and planning policies, disinvestment, declining economic opportunities, and other opportunities outside of the crowded 7th Ward.
To honor and reclaim the history and cultural contributions of the 7th Ward, we invite you to envision a development that transcends the constraints and obstacles imposed by discriminatory economic, racial, planning strategies, and policies. Emphasizing inclusivity and sustainability, your designs should serve as inspiring examples of how similar approaches can be applied in other communities to prevent deterioration and preserve their heritage spearheading a visionary approach to community development.
Make your resume stand out with the premier sustainability designation called the LEED Green Associate! LEED is simply a sustainability scorecard for green buildings. As buildings can become LEED Certified, people can become LEED accredited! The best way to break into the sustainability space is to attain the LEED Green Associate. It also shows employers and clients you have certified knowledge in the field. Since the LEED GA exam doesn’t have a stellar pass rate, the value of the extra letters behind your name will carry even more weight.
Our engaging webinars have helped over 10K students and professionals learn the material cold AND clear the exam with a very high passing rate. The LEED Professional Designation has helped past participants attain internships and jobs and now is a great time to add this credential.
