Hometown: Calgary, Alberta, Canada Education Background: Bachelor of Arts in History and Classics at the University of Alberta
How did you get interested in your field?
I began with an interest in architecture history. After researching the architecture that surrounded the University of Alberta, I noticed that a lot of my favorite buildings had been torn down or were at risk of being torn down. Historic Preservation became a way for me to save the thing I loved most.
What was your background prior to coming to Penn?
I began with a wider focus on general history and classics, but I quickly noticed an interest in architecture history. I then began to focus on Roman architecture, leading me to research Pompeii and architecture terminology for my undergrad thesis. To gain experience in preservation prior to Penn, I worked for the Edmonton Heritage Council, the Buffalo Nations Museum in Banff, Alberta, and volunteered for a community development group called Green Violin.
Why did you choose Penn?
I chose Penn because of the numerous opportunities that are exposed to me through the multidisciplinary approach of the program. Penn also has an excellent international reputation which can expose me to preservation around the world. Even after only a couple months, Penn has opened many doors for me not just in the US but also internationally.
What has been your favorite class so far?
Though I have just started, my favorite class has become Introduction to Conservation Science. As my undergrad is in history, Conservation Science has given me a whole new perspective on preservation. I am excited to continue learning about the material science side of preservation.
What do you like best about Philadelphia?
Philadelphia has such a rich and lively history. Living in Philadelphia allows me to practice my historic preservation skills around every corner. I am even able to live in a preserved historic building!
What kinds of activities and/or organizations are you involved in?
I am currently working for the Center of Architecture Conservation as a Research Assistant. I am hoping to volunteer around Philadelphia as the year continues!
What are your career ambitions?
My dream would be to work in Calgary and attempt to improve the historic preservation laws, policies, ideologies, and methods in Western Canada. I also hope to get some international experience that can allow me to gain a more wholistic view of the field. I hope that my international experience can also help me to better understand how to improve Canadian preservation.
