BIO
Esra Şahin Burat is an Associate Professor at the Southeast University in Nanjing, China, where she also serves as the vice director of the Asian Architectural Archive Center. She received her Bachelor of Architecture from the Middle East Technical University (Turkey), Master of Architecture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (USA), and PhD in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania (USA). She is a recipient of the SOM Foundation Fellowship and the ACSA Steel Design Award for Excellence among other awards. She is a registered architect in Turkey, where she was commissioned by provincial municipalities as a consultant and designer for various urban renewal projects. She was the vice president-elect of the Turkish Chamber of Architects Mersin Chapter and an elected member of the Mersin City Council Executive Board. As a co-researcher, she participated in an extensive multidisciplinary research project focusing on shelter design for extreme climates led by the University of Bath (UK). Her areas of interest include architectural theory and design, particularly theories of nature, materials, orientation, habitation, and representation in architecture, and the relationship between architecture and the natural/cultural environment.
