Hometown: New York, NY Education Background: B.A. in Urban and Public Policy Studies, University at Buffalo
How did you get interested in your field?
I grew up between the city and suburbs, which provided me with a unique perspective on the strengths and challenges of both built environments. I was always curious about the physical and social elements that evoked joy or disdain in certain places. So, I gradually fell into the world of planning through literature, lectures, and just being a flaneur.
What was your background prior to coming to Penn?
Prior to Penn, I received my BA in Urban and Public Policy Studies from the University at Buffalo. I came straight from undergrad, with internships in budget management.
Why did you choose Penn?
When considering graduate programs, I sought an education that extended beyond the classroom. Given Philadelphia’s journey to modern times as a pre-revolutionary war city, the urban fabric tells stories of development and lived experiences. I also felt that Philadelphia captured a special harmony between the fastness of New York and the slowness of Buffalo. Additionally, the MCP program being within a design school spoke to the skillset I wanted to obtain.
What has been your favorite class so far?
Tough to choose, but probably Modeling Geographic Objects (CPLN 5030). It’s the introductory GIS course that teaches students how to visualize data spatially, a skill you’ll have to use in every class. You get to turn on both sides of your brain, and be as analytical or creative as you want.
What are you learning right now that will help you in the future?
I’m enrolled in Community Engagement for Planners (CPLN 6270), Public Policy Analytics (CPLN 5920), and Law of Planning and Urban Development (CPLN 5090). I’m also in Planning Studio (CPLN 7040), where my group is developing a corridor plan that incorporates elements of Afrofuturism in Cleveland.
What do you like best about Philadelphia?
There’s a strong sense of community here- it’s a city that shows you the love you give it.
What kinds of activities and/or organizations are you involved in?
I currently work as a Student Assistant in the Development and Alumni Relations office, and as a Teaching Assistant for Professor Lisa Servon. I’m also a board member for the Student Planning Association (SPA) and Rebuilding Together Philadelphia (RTP) Wharton/Weitzman Block Build.
What are your career ambitions?
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly where I want to end up. I came to Weitzman with a set career plan… which quickly blurred after obtaining a breadth of planning knowledge and skills. Regardless, I aim to work in a space that supports my original desire to create tangible resilient and equitable impacts.
