Hometown: Philadelphia, PA
Education Background: B.A. Political Science, Villanova University
How did you get interested in your field?
I was born and raised in Philadelphia, so my interest in city planning largely stems from my personal experiences. My constant encounters with diverse communities, interactions with the natural and built environments, and utilization of the many city-provided public amenities really shaped my fascination about urbanity. While in undergrad, I majored in political science and double minored in sociology and sustainability studies–subjects that opened my eyes to even greater areas of interest such as environmental injustice, urban competitiveness and resilience, and green infrastructure. I then chose to pursue a master’s degree in city planning because I wanted to expand on my already acquired knowledge and gain invaluable tools to help make a difference in communities that need it the most.
What was your background prior to coming to Penn?
Prior to Penn, I studied at Villanova University. Following graduation, I had the opportunity to work as an English Teaching Assistant in a small Moravian town in the Czech Republic.
Why did you choose Penn?
I chose to attend Penn because of its well-established MCP program, resources, incredible faculty, and location in Philadelphia–a living classroom where the textbook comes to life. Before I applied, I also had the chance to speak with professors and current students about the program. Whether via email or over a Zoom call, I received a plethora of sincere and useful information that helped me to narrow down my decision and ultimately choose Penn.
What do you like best about Philadelphia?
In my (totally not) unbiased opinion, Philadelphia is truly a gem of a city! I have made many a few memories visiting Rittenhouse Square with friends, getting lunch at Reading Terminal Market, and visiting the Philadlelphia Museum of Art on Sunday afternoons. Whether you’re a walkable cities enthusiast (like me), a history buff, foodie, or really into sports, Philly has something to offer for everyone.
What are your career ambitions?
After I graduate from Penn, I hope to become a licenced city planner and work at a cross-section where politics meets environmental advocacy meets education. I believe that these areas of life are not separate but intrinsically interconnected and necessary for the advancement of society.
