Hometown: Chongqing, China Education Background: B.Arch, Southeast University, China; M.E. in Architecture, Tongji University, China
How did you get interested in your field?
I took a long journey to find out what I love and who I want to be. As an architecture student, I found myself more drawn to designing spaces between buildings—areas that foster social interaction and create vibrant communal environments—rather than the buildings themselves. Later, when studying urban design, I became fascinated by how data-driven analysis and evidence-based research could inform better design decisions. Then upon reflecting on my career choice, I realized that the ability to positively impact others' lives is what truly motivates me. Transportation planning, which merges my passion for shaping urban spaces, my interest in data analysis, and my desire to serve the public good, is where I found my true calling.
What was your background prior to coming to Penn?
Before coming to Penn, I studied architecture and urban design, along with conducting academic research on urban environments in China. During this time, I spent a semester studying architecture as an exchange student at KTH in Stockholm and explored landscape environments during a summer semester at the Israel Institute of Technology. On the career side, I gained hands-on experience through internships in both public building design and residential developments, as well as working as a project manager intern and data analyst intern at two different real estate companies.
Why did you choose Penn?
I chose Penn for three main reasons. First, I value the well-developed interdisciplinary program with its various concentrations, which not only provide me with a comprehensive understanding of the diverse factors influencing cities but also offer a clear path to build my career. Second, the MCP program's STEM designation is important for international students like me who want to gain more work experience in the U.S. after graduation. Lastly, the scholarship I received has been a tremendous financial relief, for which I’m incredibly grateful.
What has been your favorite class so far? CPLN 5030 Modelling Geographic Object – Jammal Green
Although we call it a GIS course, Jammal taught us not only GIS, but also how to understand data, how to use R in data processing, and how to organize files. I’ve benefited greatly from this class, as it laid the foundation for my R coding and file organization.
What do you like best about Philadelphia?
The people and the food! During my first year here, I was touched by the kindness of strangers and made lasting friendships with my neighbors. I've seen small acts of care, like drivers stopping to move traffic cones for buses or trolleys. As someone who enjoys exploring different cuisines, I appreciate how Philadelphia offers a wide range of affordable, diverse food options. The city can be a bit chaotic at times, but it’s full of energy and charm.
What are your career ambitions?
I want to become a transportation planner and project manager in the future, with a focus on creating more accessible, equitable, and sustainable transportation systems, particularly for underserved communities. I’m also eager to better understand the forces behind decision-making and to work closely with those in positions of power to find more effective approaches that prevent minorities from being sacrificed in trade-offs.
