Hometown: Hangzhou,China Education Background: Bachelor in Architecture in Zhejiang University
How did you get interested in your field?
I grew up in a mixed environment of small towns and rural areas, with a deep love for nature and a passion for adventure from a young age. I also witnessed the significant transformation of China's urban landscape over several decades, where many rural areas and historical relics were wiped out. This reflects both the positive aspects of development and the potential risks for future sustainable growth. After completing my undergraduate studies in architecture, I sought to explore larger scales and find better strategies for humanity to coexist harmoniously with nature and achieve development through mutual benefit with the natural world.
What was your background prior to coming to Penn?
I earned my degree in Architecture after five years of study at Zhejiang University, during which I completed two internships in China.
Why did you choose Penn?
Penn's landscape architecture program places great emphasis on design across various scales, from urban design to garden design, allowing me to explore everything that interests me. I believe I can gain a comprehensive set of design skills here that will complement my undergraduate background, which is why I chose Penn.
What has been your favorite class so far?
My favorite course is Media III taught by Bobby. It was my first time working with GIS software. Although the occasional bugs can be frustrating, I really enjoy using both rational and intuitive approaches to process and analyze urban data. I am currently a TA for this course as well.
What are you learning right now that will help you in the future?
The studio I am currently enrolled in is called Ludic Future, and its focus is on designing play spaces for Shkodër, Albania, using play as a catalyst for urban development. I had previously realized that my portfolio lacked designs for public leisure spaces, so I am looking to create work in this studio to address that gap.
What do you like best about Philadelphia?
I really love the fall in Philadelphia—the weather is pleasant, and every day brings beautiful sunsets.
What kinds of activities and/or organizations are you involved in?
In my first semester at Penn, I joined the school's a cappella choir and took part in a New Year's concert. Now, I am working as a student service worker at the Weitzman School.
What are your career ambitions?
After graduation, I hope to work at an established firm to hone my skills. Once the time is right, I plan to start my own design studio.
