The Weitzman School of Design permits students two earn the Master of Science in Historic Preservation and Master of Science in Design: Environmental Building Design degrees concurrently through the MSHP/MSD-EBD dual degree program. This program is designed to be completed in three years (5 full-time semesters + 1 part-time semester). Taken independently, the MSHP degree requires 19 credits and the MSD-EBD requires 16 credits. Through this dual degree sequence, students earn both degrees in a total of 26 credits (12 HSPV credits and 14 MSD-EBD credits).
To avoid time conflicts between required courses that could result in increased time to degree completion, this dual degree requires adherence to strict course sequencing, as outlined below. Deviation from the standard course of study could result in delays in degree completion and/or additional tuition costs. Weitzman scholarships are disbursed based on the standard course of study. Avoidable additional time in the program or avoidable overload tuition costs do not result in increased Weitzman scholarship.
MSHP/MSD-EBD dual degree students are advised by the program directors of both degrees, and have program advisors from staff in both departments.

*HSPV Summer Institute: HSPV 7900: Summer Institute is optional for dual degree students
**Digital Media Waiver: It is assumed that many students entering the MSD-EBD/HSPV dual degree will have the digital media foundation from their prior design work to waive out of HSPV 6240A: Digital Media I and HSPV 6240B: Digital Media II. Students who are interested in waiving this HSPV requirement and replacing it with an elective should follow the standard process for requesting a waiver from the Historic Preservation department. Students who are approved to waive HSPV 6240A and HSPV 6240B will be able to replace this course with one HSPV elective credit.
***Joint Thesis/Research Project: The dual degree culminates with a final research project that bridges both disciplines. To accomplish this, students take ARCH 7550: EBD Research Project in the final Fall semester for 2 CUs. This course replaces HSPV 7100: Thesis I, although students will bring on their HSPV Thesis advisor mid-way through the Fall semester to guide the Historic Preservation perspective of their final project. In the final Spring semester, students take HSPV 7110: Thesis II for 1 CU and ARCH 7090: EBD Research Studio for 1 CU (instead of the usual 2 CUs attributed to ARCH 7090).
