Sam Sklar is a program associate at Smart Growth America/Transportation for America in Washington D.C. Before coming to PennDesign, Sklar worked at Walk Boston, a pedestrian advocacy group in Boston.
What does a typical day as Sam look like?
This is too hard to answer. Take a look at my reams of to-dos. Usually, I try to keep a block schedule for max efficiency for tasks. Sometimes that works.
What’s been your favorite professional project so far?
We’re working to bring daily passenger rail service back to the Gulf Coast, which has been idle since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Who’s had the most influence on your work?
Probably Robert Greene, but that would make me a complete weirdo. I’d say, my current boss, Beth Osborne, who has helped me become a better thinker and doer and has helped me develop my design instincts. She has such a good understanding of what it means to be a good worker and how to deploy the knowledge you need when you need it.
If you could go backward or forward in time, what era would you choose and why?
I like to think I can affect the most change now, but if you pull my arm it’ll be to Germany in late July 1914 to tell Kaiser Wilhelm, “JUST HOLD ON A SECOND.”
What do you miss most about your time at PennDesign?
The ability to decide for myself how I wanted to work a solo project! Also, the bumps in the road learning to work with others. When you work, every project has to be an A, every time, and people have families so staying late is not always an option. It's hard to be honest and still work to a deadline, but we did our best.
What was the best advice you’ve received and who was it from?
Probably from Kate Daniel. Can’t tell you that, though.
What’s your favorite place in Philly?
Murph's for Italian, Meyerson Plaza for happy hour.
Favorite book or movie about art/design
Probably The Power Broker by Robert Caro because it's so much more than a book about art/design. It's about the art and design of politics and policy, which ultimately runs the world. Follow the cash and you'll find influence and power.

Design hero, living or dead?
Probably Don Shoup, who has never wavered from his core, simple idea: free parking has killed this country.
Pretzel or cheesesteak?
Roast Pork
Paris or London?
Amsterdam
