We’re excited to announce a professional development trip to Washington, D.C.! This event was carefully coordinated by Joan Brierton (MSHP’92), Senior Historic Preservation Specialist at the Center for Historic Buildings U.S. General Services Administration and co-sponsored by the Weitzman Office of Professional Development & Leadership, the Department of Historic Preservation, and the Weitzman Alumni Relations Office.
We will be visiting government agencies including the General Services Administration, National Park Service, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and the National Gallery of Art. The day's events will conclude with a happy hour open to HSPV alumni, co-sponsored by Weitzman Development & Alumni Relations.
In addition to educating students about their programs and roles and responsibilities, each speaker will discuss the qualifications necessary for employment within their agency. Skill set expands far beyond education and training -- to communication, presentation, public relations, and negotiation skills, to name just a few. Even though they may not be eligible for federal employment, international students will also benefit from understanding the regulatory environment, as many federal projects are contracted out to private firms.
All graduate historic preservation students are welcome on this trip! Even if you attended last year, the agenda is different this year, so you're encouraged to attend again.
The department will be commissioning a charter bus for the group. The bus will return to Philadelphia after the happy hour, leaving D.C. at 7:30pm. The cost for students is $20. Please email Kali Meeks (kmeeks@upenn.edu) for registration information.
If you require any accessibility accommodation, such as live captioning, audio description, or a sign language interpreter, please email news@design.upenn.edu. Please note, we require at least five (5) business days’ notice.
