We’re excited to announce a firm crawl in Washington, D.C.! This event was carefully coordinated by Joan Brierton (MSHP’92), Senior Historic Preservation Specialist at the Center for Historic Buildings U.S. General Services Administration and co-sponsored by the Weitzman Office of Professional Development & Leadership, the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation, and the Alumni Relations Office.
We will visit five government agencies including the General Services Administration, National Park Service, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, Commission of Fine Arts, and the Smithsonian Institution. In addition to educating students about their programs, roles, and responsibilities, each speaker will discuss the qualifications necessary for employment within their agency. The skill set related to working for the federal government expands far beyond education and training and includes communication, presentation, public relations, and strategies for negotiation. Even if not eligible for federal employment, international students will also benefit from understanding the regulatory environment, as many federal projects are contracted out to private firms. We will end the day with a Happy Hour with D.C. alumni. Registration will cost $20 to reserve a seat (chartered bus to D.C.). This is non-refundable.
Saturday, February 18, 12pm – 7:30pm
Randy Mason teaches in the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation and is a Professor in the Department of City & Regional Planning. He and NCR Architectural Conservator, Courtney Magill (MSHP’15) will lead students on an National Park Service (NPS) Projects Tour starting at the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool. Courtney will highlight recent and upcoming conservation and rehabilitation projects that NPS is leading on the memorial building. Randy’s discussion will cover the Cultural Landscape Inventory completed last year for NPS by the Urban Heritage Project team.
After touring the Lincoln Memorial and its cultural landscape, students will have the option of touring two nearby NPS preservation sites: the Tidal Basin and Jefferson Memorial (led by Courtney) or Virginia Avenue’s series of small parks and memorials (led by Randy).
