For DesignPhiladelphia 2024, the 20th edition of the citywide festival, the Weitzman School presents a special, sneak-peek screening of Sitting Still (Gina Angelone, 2024), a documentary film that sees the world through the lens of Laurie Olin, the urban visionary whose humanist approach to design has helped define the modern-day city. The film gives voice to the environmental and social concerns that have driven Olin's vision for over 50 years and affected our collective humanity. Sitting Still also features architectural visionaries Frank Gehry and Billie Tsien, landscape designer and artist Walter Hood, among others.
As founding partner of the Philadelphia-based design studio that bears his name, Laurie Olin led the design of some of the most iconic landscapes in the United States, including Apple Park (Cupertino, California), the Barnes Foundation (Philadelphia), and Bryant Park (New York City). He is practice professor emeritus of landscape architecture at Penn.
The screening is followed by a Q&A with Olin and the director, moderated by Catherine Seavitt (Meyerson Professor and chair of landscape architecture at Weitzman). A reception will follow.
