Gayoung Lee is an interdisciplinary artist with a focus on performance, installation, video, and writing. Born in South Korea, they investigate the formation of a relationship, conflict, obsession, and trauma by linguistic alienation. In their work, the body becomes the canvas on which words are applied to trigger movement, sound, and speech. Lee holds a B.F.A. in painting from Seoul National University, B.A. in philosophy and B.I.S in comparative literature from Yonsei University. Lee is currently a Fulbrighter pursuing their MFA degree at the University of Pennsylvania.
In 2021, Lee co-founded The Duck Among Us and had their work shown at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Seoul, Project Hashtag. Lee was a recipient of numerous grants including the Fulbright Award for Graduate Study(2022-), Shinyang Scholarship from the Shinyang Cultural Foundation (2019), Short-term Overseas Study Abroad Program from the Seoul National University’s Office of International Affairs (2018, Central Saint Martin, London), and the Next Century Humanities Scholarship from the Korea Student Aid Foundation (2011-2015).
