Halloween is tomorrow and spookiness is in the air… it is hard not to be in the spirit with tv channels filled with Halloween horrors and theatres filled with scary movies. A go to classic movie for me is always the Addams Family (I can’t wait to see the re-make cartoon version this weekend)! Did you know the creator of Addams Family, Charles Addams, was an architecture student here at Weitzman School of Design in the 1930’s? Yup. Although it is not confirmed it is said that Charles Addams’ inspiration for the Addams Family mansion was college Hall. And, if you have seen College Hall, there is no arguing the resemblance! We here in Admissions are lucky to have a beautiful view of College Hall from our office window. Addams legacy is evident throughout campus, if you look closely you will find sculptures inspired by Addams character Thing and a silhouette sculpture of the Addams Family, both near Charles Addams Fine Arts Hall. Ken Lum, Chair of the Fine Arts department here at Weitzman says, “Charles Addams is important for his calling attention to difference and diversity in society, as what makes American life rich and wonderful”. The Weitzman School of Design also awards a Charles Memorial Prize each year to an outstanding graduating MFA student. If you have never seen the Addams Family go, see it now! you can also read more about this topic in the recent PEnn News article here.
