While President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863; enslaved people in Texas didn’t receive word until June 19, 1865. Yesterday, President Joe Biden declared JUNETEENTH a Federal Holiday and starting next year it will be recognized as such on our University Academic Calendar. It is a day of honor, celebration, and reflection.
Today, the University sponsored a keynote address with Dr. Ibram X. Kendi in commemoration of Juneteenth. In which they put it perfectly, “we have to learn how to self-critique, self-reflect and change.” We hope that you will join us in taking the time to do so, not only today and tomorrow, but every day.
