Not too long ago we blogged about the Monument Lab in regards to public spaces and monuments- The Black Lives Matter Movement has shed a new light on controversial monuments in today’s society. Penn has also been reflecting on our monuments, and I am happy to let you know that earlier this month Penn announced they will be removing the statue of George Whitefield. The statue was erected in the Quad in the early 1900’s. While Whitefield has connections with Penn it is known that he advocated for Slavery and thus there is no place or justification to honor him on our campus. You can read the full article here. This is wonderful news!
