Upcoming Changes to Printing Environment

Announcement Date
Wednesday, July 3, 2024 - 12:07

Over the next few weeks, Weitzman IT Services will be implementing changes to our printing environment that will enhance its reliability, security, and efficiency. The first major change is retiring our current print server known as “Vulcan” (\\vulcan.design.upenn.edu) and launching our new print server, “Printing” (\\printing.design.upenn.edu). The second major change is moving from our current accounting system Equitrac to a new system called PaperCut.

Detailed instructions will be added to our website, and we will follow up with an email to the design listserv once the project is completed. Changes will take place throughout July and will include the following:

  • There will be minor changes to how you add printers from the new print server.
  • Printer names will be updated, and public printers will have new signage.
  • Refund requests will be submitted through a link provided on our website.
  • We will introduce a tool called “Web Print” which will allow users to print simple PDFs from their laptops.
  • Billing codes for group printing will continue to be created on request by department coordinators and faculty. Current billing codes for summer 2024 in Equitrac can continue to be used; IT will notify these groups individually when we need to transition.

Printing and plotting services will continue to be available throughout July. We do not anticipate a time when services will not be available. There will, however, be a short time when we have an overlap of our new and old systems.

Please reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns. We will email updates as they become relevant.
