Google Chrome Keeps Saying "Aw Snap!" Error, Won't Display Webpages
- Issue / Description: When launching Google Chrome version 78.0.x or later, the message "Aw Snap! Something went wrong while displaying this webpage." keeps appearing, no websites will load.
- Cause: In versions of Google Chrome and versions of Microsoft Edge, Microsoft's Code Integrity feature is enabled. Symantec is not compatible with this feature in Chrome/Chromium.
- Resolution: Update your Symantec client to version to 14.2 RU2 MP1 build 14.2.5569.2100 or newer, or remove Symantec entirely.
Follow our step-by-step guide on how to resolve this issue below:
Uninstall Old Symantec or Antivirus Software
- Uninstall your old version of Symantec
- For Windows, go to Windows Settings >> Apps >> Uninstall
- For Mac, go to the Symantec client menu >> Symantec Endpoint Protection >> Uninstall Symantec Endpoint Protection
- Make sure any other antivirus software is uninstalled/removed (Norton, McAffee, etc), as they may cause issues with Symantec
Update Your Symantec Client
- Go to the UPenn ISC website
- Select your operating system
- Click "Download Symantec Endpoint Protection" and authenticate with PennKey
- Save the Symantec installer to your local computer
Alternative Fixes
Alternative options also include running Chrome with Code Integrity disabled:
- Run Chrome.exe (with the Windows Run app or via Mac OS Terminal) with this command: Chrome.exe --disable-features=RendererCodeIntegrity
- On a Windows machine, set the following regkey value to 0: Key: HKLM\Software\Policies\Google\Chrome Name: RendererCodeIntegrityEnabled Type: DWORD (32-bit) Value: 0
- Note: If the regkey does not exist, create the registry key.
