  • The Big U

The Big U is a protective system around Manhattan, driven by the needs and concerns of its communities. Stretching from West 57th street south to The Battery and up to East 42th street, the Big U protects 10 continuous miles of low-lying geography that comprise an incredibly dense, vibrant, and vulnerable urban area.(rebuild by design)

Penn takes a BIG Risk

Building on its successful work for Rebuild by Design in the aftermath of Storm Sandy,  PennDesign has launched a new seminar on the subjects of Resilience and Risk. The seminar is conducted by Matthijs Bouw – the brains behind the BIG U scheme to defend Manhattan against sea level rise and Penn Adjunct Professor Ellen Neises. The seminar involves a wide range of guest speakers and ensures that Penn Design is front and centre of these important issues.
