Hometown: Houston, TX Education Background: B.S. Civil Engineering, Architectural Design from Stanford University, class of 2023
How did you get interested in your field?
I have always loved architecture and was certain that I wanted to pursue it, but I initially didn't know that much about landscape architecture. Through my first semester of the M.Arch program at Penn, I realized that my approach to design, which is rooted in Indigenous design methodologies and relational thinking, would require me to know more about landscape and ecology than I had before. I applied for a dual degree in landscape and I have been thrilled with how the combination has allowed me to synthesize knowledge from both fields and dedicate more time to my research on Indigenous architectural practices.
What was your background prior to coming to Penn?
I did civil engineering at Stanford; I had lots of engineering experience but was as confident in my design ability. I enjoyed classes on building science and history—-I have an art history minor.
Why did you choose Penn?
Penn's emphasis on creating diverse classes and pushing the boundaries in design and design research is really inspiring to me. Also, I wanted a challenge!
What has been your favorite class so far?
I have really enjoyed my history and theory classes, especially the architecture theory sequence with Professor Fernando Lara.
What are you learning right now that will help you in the future?
The LARP media sequence, especially Media II which is focused on GIS, is already incredibly helpful at helping me to develop my mapping skills and representation ability.
What do you like best about Philadelphia?
Philadelphia has world-class dining at affordable prices. I'm a foodie and I love trying new places! I also love that it is pretty easy to get anywhere in the city, especially without a car.
What kinds of activities and/or organizations are you involved in?
Natives at Penn, Upstream (a new student publication!) and I work at the Fab Lab as a laser technician. I am also volunteering with the city and with the Bartram's Garden Lenape Research Fellowship. Last year, I was a Penn Praxis fellow working with the Ramapough Lenape Turtle Clan.
What are your career ambitions?
I hope to work in Indian Country to help native communities across North America develop infrastructure and environmental strategies to protect the landscapes we love. Hopefully I can continue the work I've started at Penn.
