Hometown: Shanghai, China / Queens, NY Education Background: B.S. Arch from The Ohio State University
How did you get interested in your field?
Architecture didn’t fully grab me at first. What really sparked my interest was learning about urban design and planning during my gap year, where design decisions could affect and empower communities. That’s when I saw how this field could align with my values.
What was your background prior to coming to Penn?
I obtained my bachelor's degree from OSU in 2022, then took a gap year and studied abroad in France. I’ve worked in real estate and volunteered in design-build projects (Habitat for Humanity)
Why did you choose Penn?
I chose Penn because I enjoy the option here to explore both experimental and practical design approaches, as well as the ability to bridge multi-disciplinary interests through certificates, dual-degree programs, and research opportunities such as PennPraxis. Also, Penn is closest to home of the schools I was accepted to; I like to stay close to my family.
What has been your favorite class so far?
History/Theory, because I enjoy open-ended discussions and connecting the dots. Another class I really enjoy is an elective I’m taking right now, where we design for the neurodivergent community through co-design.
What are you learning right now that will help you in the future?
Co-design strategy, housing design
What do you like best about Philadelphia?
It’s a walkable city. The food scene and the Schuylkill River Trail are also my favorite parts of Philly.
What kinds of activities and/or organizations are you involved in?
I’m the co-treasurer at NOMAS PENN. I also enjoy playing badminton with friends whenever I need a break from studio.
What are your career ambitions?
I’d like to work at the intersection of architecture, city planning, and landscape, focusing on public spaces that strengthen communities. I also hope one day I can work in Europe or Asia.
