If departments are going to continue to produce Ph.D.s in numbers greater than the available faculty openings, they need to be giving better and broader career advice. In that spirit, I’ve written this dispatch to supply the ivory tower with some intel from the trenches, where more opportunities abound than faculty advisers and their grad students might expect.
