Three members of the Weitzman community have been recognized by The Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA) with 2023 Faculty Awards. One of the world's largest and most respected organizations for landscape architecture professionals, CELA is composed of virtually all the programs of higher learning in landscape architecture in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and its reach extends to Europe and China.
Sonja Dümpelmann, professor and acting chair of landscape architecture, is the recipient of the 2023 CELA Award for Excellence in Research and/or Creative Work - Senior Level.
The jury for the award noted that “Dümpelmann has clearly expanded the boundaries and knowledge of landscape history, shifting away from the white male heroism canon and shining light on the histories of landscape architecture that women and minority communities have contributed to, as well as diving into the designed landscapes that are less celebrated or known. There is a clear thread to her work: to uncover hidden histories of landscape architecture."
LA+, the interdisciplinary journal of landscape architecture based at Weitzman, is the recipient of the 2023 CELA Excellence in Communications Award. The publication is overseen by Richard Weller, Meyerson Chair of Urbanism and professor and chair of landscape architecture, and Tatum Hands, editor in chief of LA+.
“Outstanding publication!,” the jury for the award remarked. “The quality of the journal is exceptional with a balance between visual and verbal communication. It has clearly become a venue for broad world-wide engagement both within and outside the discipline of landscape architecture. Its reach, from students to academics to practitioners, as well as its interdisciplinary audience and contributors, is both wide and deep.”
The awards were presented at CELA’s annual conference, which was held in San Antonio, Texas.
