The ARI Robotics Lab houses a series of flexible robot manufacturing work cells equipped with a wide range of tools that support diverse fabrication tasks. This state-of-the-art facility and its globally sourced specialist tools bring world-class manufacturing capabilities to Weitzman’s design programs, allowing novel fabrication approaches to be explored in Weitzman’s design studios and technology courses, creating opportunities for students to fabricate novel partial building prototypes at full-scale. Located centrally on campus in the Stuart Weitzman School of Design’s main building, the lab is only steps away from student’s design studio spaces.
Home to the Master of Science in Design: Robotics and Autonomous Systems (MSD-RAS) program’s design studios and technology courses, the lab also supports courses in the M.Arch and MSD-AAD programs. A second-year M.Arch core technology course also introduces all architecture students to robotic fabrication, while Studio RAP’s Lucas Ter Hall was recently invited to run a multi-day workshop on Digital Craftsmanship in Robotic Ceramics that was open to all Weitzman students. While digital fabrication processes like 3D printing, laser cutting and milling are provided by the Weitzman Fabrication Lab, the ARI Robotics Lab houses 6-axis and 7-axis industrial robotic arms that can be used for diverse manufacturing tasks such as large format additive and subtractive manufacturing, and formative processes including, but not limited to, bending, folding, cutting, carving, 3D printing, milling, casting, pick and place assembly, incremental forming, fibre composite filament winding, and more. The ARI Robotics Lab enables the Weitzman School of Design to operate at the forefront of academic teaching and research, empowering students and faculty to positively shape the future of the built environment.
