What is your best Weitzman memory?
One of my favorite memories at Weitzman so far has been visiting Thailand through the Silverstein Photography Studio Abroad program. During the two-week trip, we explored Bangkok and Chiang Mai while developing our conceptually-driven photography projects rooted in Thai history and culture. My project is a video-based work exploring Bangkok’s transportation - specifically boat, rail, bus, car, and motorbike - and exploring Bangkok’s shift from a mainly canal-based city to a road-based one. Along the way, we connected with MFA students from Chulalongkorn University and took part in artist talks with photographer Dow Wasiksiri and performance artist Kawita Vatanajyankur.
One tip to help make the transition into grad school?
Buy a notebook and write down inspiration that sticks with you. Whether that’s in an art exhibition, a quote, a book someone recommends, a historic/contemporary reference – you never know what elements of inspiration will be relevant to you at different moments in your practice. I've found that I'm taking notes and sketching constantly and refer back to those references as I'm working through an idea.

My favorite project is work I presented for my final review last semester - a collection of large cyanotypes as well as Black performance venues in different stages of their life cycle. The source imagery is from various photojournalists - from the 1960s and today, as well as my own photographs. This work explores the idea of the building as a ruin, considering the crowd’s presence and purpose as the energy of the crowd lives on. This was my favorite project because I was able to create the largest cyanotypes I’ve printed thus far and connect with archival imagery, imagining it in a new way.
