The Fine Arts Clay Studio facilitates the investigation of clay as a sculptural material and is equipped for hand-building processes, large-scale fabrication, and working with clay alongside non-traditional materials. Earthenware and a limited palette of glazes and cold finishes are provided to students enrolled in clay classes.
Clay Studio
The Clay Studio includes two large worktables, 24 custom-built sculpture stands, and assorted hand tools for fabrication. This studio also includes a four-foot slab roller and an extruder with hollow die set.
Kiln Room
The Kiln Room safely houses two 40-cubic-foot gas kilns, one 20-cubic-foot front-loading electric kiln, one 9.9-cubic-foot top-loading electric kiln, and one 2.6-cubic-foot top-loading electric kiln. In addition, the kiln room is equipped with a bench grinder, power tools, work surfaces, and raw materials. The kiln room also houses the clay reclaim area with a plaster table and pugmill for clay recycling.
MFA Project Studio
The MFA Project Studio, intended for graduate student research in clay, is equipped with two potter’s wheels, a work table, and storage. This room also includes a spray booth with an HVLP sprayer for safely applying glazes and other ceramic finishes.
Sculpture & Clay Project Studio
The Sculpture & Clay Project Studio can be utilized, in coordination with the Clay Studio Manager, by graduate and undergraduate students for sculpture & clay projects that require extended work time or more workspace in proximity to the kiln room. The project space includes three worktables, two shelving units, and a lockable cabinet stocked with hand tools for fabrication. This room also includes a shared sink and spray booth. Note: This room is an interdisciplinary space and requires collaboration between students, faculty, and studio managers.
