Housed in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design, The Ian L. McHarg Center for Urbanism and Ecology was launched in 2019 as a transdisciplinary platform for collaborative research supporting the future of life on earth. The Center funds and broadcasts original scholarly research, convenes students, faculty, and practitioners, and awards the annual McHarg Fellowship.
Ian L. McHarg (1920 - 2001), professor and chair of of the Department of Landscape Architecture from 1957 through 1986, was arguably the most important environmental planner and landscape architect of the twentieth century. Through his writings and teaching, McHarg brought the sciences and the arts together to develop innovating planning and design techniques for improving the relationship between design and nature.
The Ian L. McHarg Center for Urbanism and Ecology at Penn empowers landscape architects and planners to meet current and future challenges to life on Earth. Through transdisciplinary research and public dialogue with scholars, students, communities, and practitioners, the Center provides a global platform for ecological thinking and innovative design across multiple scales of the landscape.
