This project transforms a dense urban site in Seoul into a cultural landmark gallery space that bridges history and modernity. Enhancing urban connectivity, reusing materials, and adopting innovative spatial strategies reimagining the site with reorganized transparency and flipped spatial relationships.
Drawing inspiration from Seoul’s historical grid, influenced by Beijing city planning, the design introduces north-south and east-west pathways to improve circulation while selectively deconstructing buildings to create openness and adaptability. Salvaged bricks from demolished structures are repurposed for the northern façade, showcasing weathered textures that honor the site’s material heritage while reducing environmental impact.
Through its architectural language, the gallery contrasts tradition and modernity. Recycled brick façades evoke history and memory, while white interior walls act as a canvas for natural weathering, visually emphasizing the passage of time and deepening the connection between architecture and ecology. A new metal parapet channels rainwater to the northern façade, inviting dynamic interactions between weathering processes and material performance.
Strategically designed façades enhance visibility and functionality, with a transparent southern façade showcasing activity and an elevated walkway offering unique site views. Supporting exhibitions and community engagement, the project revitalizes the area as a sustainable cultural hub, blending heritage and innovation while embracing the ecological interconnectedness of architecture and its surroundings.
