The Image of Function: Architectural Diagrams in Handbooks and Normative Practices in the Twentieth Century

DISSERTATION

In modern architecture, diagrams were understood as thin descriptions transparent to the facts they represent and were widely used in planning handbooks. Through studying the historical origins, uses and iconologies of selected functional diagrams – such as aspect, bubble and flow diagrams – their complex and rich nature is revealed and implications for the architect’s functional imagination are reconsidered.
