This studio-based course focused on the opportunities and challenges of sustainable urban heritage preservation through adaptive rehabilitation. The adaptive reuse of urban heritage sites and buildings for contemporary functions with proven demand is a preservation strategy that is gaining acceptance worldwide. This approach is regarded as more capable of preserving urban heritage assets than traditional conservation methods, which are based on the strict preservation of a building or sites’ original uses and physical characteristics. However, the adaptive rehabilitation approach poses significant conceptual and design challenge as it requires interventions into the physical characteristics of neighborhoods and buildings that may affect their socio-cultural values.
