The Museum of Modern Art has announced the publication of Robert Venturi’s Complexity and Contradiction at Fifty, celebrating Venturi’s 1966 landmark book Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture, which grew out of his teaching at Penn. The book is co-edited by David Brownlee, the Frances Shapiro-Weitzenhoffer Professor of 19th Century European Art at Penn.
The Architecutral Archives holds the Venturi Scott Brown collection, including the research and publication materials for Complexity and Contradiction. Archives staff worked closely with the authors and MOMA publication staff to support research and reproduce images for this publication. This project began with a three day symposium in 2016, co-organized by MOMA and the University of Pennsylvania, and an exhibition in the Architectural Archives, curated by William Whitaker and LeAnn Custer.
