Dean Steiner invites graduates, their guests, and friends of the school to join him, the department chairs and program directors, and guest speakers James Corner (MLA’86) and Dr. Kellie Jones in celebrating the Weitzman Class of 2020.
“If we are to truly recover from the pandemic, we need to think about our future with courage and vision as well as creativity and wisdom,” says Dean Steiner. “As we move forward, the voices of Jim Corner and Kellie Jones will be more important than ever in our work.”
The webcast will include a preview of the Year End Show, an extensive online gallery featuring work by the Class of 2020 that goes live on May 16. The preview will be broadcast immediately preceding and following the ceremony. Students and faculty will be invited to join watch parties organized by their academic program. The webcast will be recorded for those who are unable to watch live, and students will receive a printed program commemorating their achievements by mail in early June.
Like the University, the Weitzman School is also planning to host an on-campus celebration of the Class of 2020 in the 2020-2021 Academic Year.

James Corner is founder and CEO of James Corner Field Operations, based in New York City, San Francisco, Philadelphia, London and Shenzhen. Corner has devoted the past 30 years to advancing the field of landscape architecture and urbanism, primarily through his leadership on high-visibility, complex urban projects around the world, as well as through teaching, public speaking and writing. Important urban public realm projects include New York’s highly acclaimed High Line; Chicago’s Navy Pier; Seattle’s Central Waterfront; London’s South Park at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park; Hong Kong’s Victoria Dockside; and Shenzhen’s new city of Qianhai, a new coastal city for 3-million people. Corner’s work has been recognized with numerous awards, most notably the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Architecture. His work has been published broadly and exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art; Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum; National Building Museum; Royal Academy of Arts, London; and Venice Biennale. Corner’s books include The High Line: Foreseen/Unforeseen (Phaidon, 2015), The Landscape Imagination (Princeton, 2014), and Taking Measures Across the American Landscape (Yale, 1996). He was named by TIME as one of “Ten Most Influential Designers”; by Fast Company as one of the “Top 50 Innovators”; and has been featured in many prominent publications. Corner is professor emeritus of landscape architecture at the Weitzman School of Design, where he has served on the faculty since 1989, and as professor and chair of landscape architecture 2000-2013. He sits on the Board of the Urban Design Forum and the Government Advisory Board of Shenzhen.
Dr. Kellie Jones is a professor in the Departments of Art History and Archaeology and African American and African Diaspora Studies at Columbia University. Her research interests include African American and African Diaspora artists, Latinx and Latin American Artists, and issues in contemporary art and museum theory. Jones, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, has also received awards for her work from the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research, Harvard University, and Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation. In 2016, she was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow. Jones’s writings have appeared in a multitude of exhibition catalogues and journals. She is the author of two books published by Duke University Press, EyeMinded: Living and Writing Contemporary Art (2011), and South of Pico: African American Artists in Los Angeles in the 1960s and 1970s (2017), which received the Walter & Lillian Lowenfels Criticism Award from the American Book Award in 2018 and was named a Best Book of the Decade in 2019 by ARTnews, Best Art Book of 2017 in The New York Times and a Best Book of 2017 in Artforum. Jones has also worked as a curator for over three decades and has numerous major national and international exhibitions to her credit. Her exhibition Now Dig This! Art and Black Los Angeles, 1960-1980, at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, was named one of the best exhibitions of 2011 and 2012 by Artforum, and best thematic show nationally by the International Association of Art Critics (AICA). She was co-curator of Witness: Art and Civil Rights in the 1960s, at the Brooklyn Museum, which was named one the best exhibitions of 2014 by Artforum.
