Tips for Successful Printing During Mid and Final Reviews

Dear Students!

As we head into the peak time for mid reviews, IT would like to provide you some helpful tips to ensure that your printing jobs are successful and that our resources are efficiently used.

To Plot on the Large Format plotters, you would have needed to take our plotting Quiz and pass. If you have not done that yet, please do so, and alert us when you have completed so we may remove the restriction. ithelp@design.upenn.edu

The Quiz has the necessary information you will need to successfully print your work. Please reference our website for printing instructions and information. https://www.design.upenn.edu/it/printers-pricing

**Note**  We have seen positive improvements on our Weitzman managed machines in regards to the ongoing Microsoft security issues with network printing. At this time we encourage you to test your ability to print from your studios via ethernet. If you continue to have issues, send your work from a print station or Lab computer. There are 30 stations available for this process located in the 321 and 324 computer labs in Meyerson Hall.  Studios will have dedicated computers, and print stations are available on the second and third floors of Meyerson Hall.

Some helpful tips to remember:

  • Follow a PDF work flow. Make sure you have formatted (flattened your layers, embedded your links, and rasterized text and line work) your files properly before sending to prevent printing errors.
  • Do not attempt to plot JPGs.
  • Save your file locally (typically the D drive on a lab computer). Do not print from a web browser, external drive, or the downloads folder.
  • Print one page at a time when sending multi-page PDFs.
  • Print early, do not wait until the morning of your review. When the print server gets inundated with jobs, there will be bottlenecking issues with long delays.
  • Always check the plotter name you would like to send to before printing. We have paper changes from the usual line up for finals so always check the plotter and the website before sending - https://www.design.upenn.edu/it/printers-pricing

Keep in mind that our computer labs are public spaces for Weitzman students and registrar-approved classes. Lab doors must be kept open to promote air flow and allow free access; masks must be worn at all times. The air temperature in the labs must remain cool to prevent computers from overheating, which can damage or destroy them. Food and drink are prohibited in the Lab at all times.

Thank you,

Weitzman ITS
