Integrated and Tailored Thermal Insulation through Gradient Multimaterial Additive Manufacturing for Masonry Architectural Components
In this paper, Polyhedral Structures Laboratory (PSL) presents a novel approach to enhancing masonry architectural components using Gradient Multimaterial Additive Manufacturing (MMAM). Through our Integrated and Tailored Thermal Insulation (ITTI) method, we combine load-bearing and thermal insulation functions into a single component, eliminating thermal bridging and improving energy efficiency. By leveraging a single-nozzle system, we achieve seamless material transitions, which we validate through experiments demonstrating enhanced thermal performance and structural integrity. Our work contributes to sustainable construction by optimizing material use and streamlining fabrication processes.
