Preliminary to an intellectual biography of Jane Jacobs, later developed as Becoming Jane Jacobs (Penn Press, 2016), this dissertation situated Jane Jacobs’s life and ideas within the histories of American urban planning, the emergent discipline of urban design, and architectural criticism, as well as the histories of city planning, urban renewal, and public housing design.
