Associate Professor of City and Regional Planning Zhongjie Lin is reexamining the theory of the “compact city” using advanced GIS tools for quantitative research and focusing on cities in South-Jiangsu.
The project explores the correlation between compact urban form and healthy city indexes in order to establish a new compact city indicators system. Compared to existing studies of the compact city, which are mainly concerned with qualitative description and macro-scale analysis, this project focuses on spatial planning at the median scales, ranging from city block to district.
Lin’s project proposes implementable compact city strategies through modeling and simulation. His research will (1) establish a key indicator system for the compact city, (2) select the criteria of the healthy city, and (3) build an interactive model to simulate the correlation between urban form and urban environmental quality. It will then use cities in Southern Jiangsu Province for case studies, collecting the data of their urban forms and local climate, and using computer systems to generate an optimized set of indicators of compact urban form.
In the context of China’s healthy city agenda, the compact city indicators system will establish a scientific foundation for more effective urban design, encourage the wide adoption of urban regeneration based on a small-block model, promote public health, and support the transformation of Chinese cities toward a sustainable model based on theoretical, practical, and political dimensions.
