Project Poldergeist is an ongoing experiment in combining video animation and climate science in order to inform and influence policy makers and the public about difficult and controversial aspects of climate adaptation. Co-directed by Simon Richter and Joshua Mosley, Project Poldergeist offers Penn undergraduate students an immersive opportunity to interact with experts engaged in cutting edge climate adaptation research in the Netherlands and other coastal areas and to understand natural processes and infrastructure through practices of on-site drawing and animation. The Poldergeist videos circulate widely on social and mainstream media in the Netherlands and in countries where Dutch engineers and designers are active; they support climate scientists and ecologists in their effort to prevent maladaptation; and are often the flashpoint for much needed public debate.
