The following scanners are available for student use in designated computer labs and print facilities across Weitzman buildings. Each type of scanner is suited to different media and purposes—please review the guidelines below to ensure the best results and to protect your original work.
Large Format Scanners (HP PageWide 4000)
These scanners are designed for digitizing large, flexible paper documents such as architectural drawings, posters, and plans. They can accommodate documents up to 36 inches wide and use a roller-feed system to move materials through quickly and produce high-quality scans.
*Please note: Because the rollers make direct contact with your work, we do not recommend using these scanners for delicate, textured, or valuable originals. Feeding fragile or thick materials through the rollers can result in creasing, smudging, or other damage.
Flatbed Scanners
Across our facilities, we provide:
15 flatbed scanners that can scan reflective materials and film negatives up to 8.5" × 11"
3 larger flatbed scanners that can scan reflective materials up to 11" × 17"
Flatbed scanners are the preferred option for delicate, rigid, or valuable materials that cannot safely pass through a roller-feed system. Please keep in mind that flatbeds have size limitations.
For oversized or particularly fragile work, students may achieve the best results by photographing their pieces using a high-resolution camera in even, well-lit conditions. This method helps preserve the integrity of your original work while producing clear documentation.

MEYS-PW4000-A 36 inch feed scanner, can scan up to 36 inches wide. You may not scan paper thicker than 200 GSM/90lb or lighter than 60 GSM, this will jam the rollers. Secure this media to a firmer backing. Do not scan work with paint, ink, or charcoal until dry or set. Materials not supported for scanning are Translucent paper less than 65 gsm, film, and cling mat. Please contact ithelp@design.upenn.edu if you have any questions on how to use this scanner.
Scan to USB is currently available.

Epson DS 50000 Scanner is an A3 (11 ¾ x16 ½ inches) Document Scanner designed to accommodate documents individually, and is ideal for users with individual capture needs, such as scanning bound materials and thick or fragile documents.
