Office of Operations and Planning

The Office of Operations and Planning is charged to manage, administer, oversee, and troubleshoot the daily operations and activities of the seven campus buildings and seven satellite sites that comprise the University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design. Office staff are directly responsible for the following:

• Tasked to ensure effective and efficient operations in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, and regulations.
• Develops and implement new policies and procedures to improve operations.
• Acts as a liaison with Facilities Services and other university offices.
• Responsible for trouble shooting and supervising all interior and exterior work such as plumbing, heating, air conditioning, electrical, carpentry, and housekeeping.
• Corresponds with and responds to inquiries from faculty, staff, students, and outside vendors and contractors.
• Manages space planning, including office, studio, and exhibition space assignments.
• Maintains Master Calendar for all exhibition and review spaces.
• Plans and coordinates special projects and annual events including Commencement, Awards Ceremony, Open House, Career Services Day, and numerous other Weitzman sponsored events.
• Chief Safety and Security Officer for the school, managing all fire, security, and safety inspections on a routine basis while administering life and health safety policies.
• The Director of Design and Construction is also responsible for project management of new construction. Responsibilities include direction of all interior and exterior renovations, bid appraisals, walkthroughs, and scheduling.

As Senior Director of Operations and Planning/Design and Construction, I would like to formally welcome you to Weitzman. Our faculty, staff, and students come from various counties, states, and countries that have diverse cultural backgrounds and customs. While the University of Pennsylvania may seem like a city unto itself, it is in fact an urban campus located within the city of Philadelphia. Therefore, I think that it’s important to establish some safety and security guidelines to make your time here as pleasant as possible.

• Always wear and display your Penn ID Card while on campus and within university buildings. This is the easiest way to distinguish between a Penn faculty, staff, student or a potential intruder.
• Often, you will need to swipe your Penn ID Card to gain entry to buildings, elevator lobbies, and stairwell entries. Do not offer to swipe your card to provide access to another person. Potential thieves will attempt to gain access in this manner. If someone does not have their ID and looks suspicious, simply ask them “Can I help you?” If they do not have a legitimate answer, walk away and contact Penn Police. Often, questioning someone will be enough of a deterrent and they will leave.
• Please secure your computers, use your lockers for any personal belongings, and lock studio doors when applicable. Keeping studio, office, or exterior doors propped open puts the personal belongings, as well as safety, of everyone in that studio or building at risk. I cannot stress how important it is to lock these doors.
• Remember to contact Penn Police should you see anyone out of the ordinary wandering the building or studios. Please contact our department after you have contacted Penn Police.
