Winka Dubbeldam, MArch MS-AAD, is a seasoned academic and design leader, having served as Chair and Miller Professor of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design from 2013 through June 2023. Apart from working on curricular revisions and faculty growth, Dubbeldam initiated the annual publication “Pressing Matters” published by ORO, and organized annual conferences at Weitzman such as the New Normal [2013], Future Cities [2014] , the ACSA [2015], Women in Architecture [2016], and lastly the prestigious ACADIA conference 2023. Previously, Professor Dubbeldam initiated and directed the Post-Professional Architecture program for 10 years (2003-2013), providing international students with innovative design skills, cutting-edge theoretical and technological knowledge, and the analytic, interpretive, and writing skills necessary for a productive and innovative career in the field of architecture. She also taught advanced architectural design studios at Columbia, Cornell and Harvard University, among other prestigious institutions. Dubbeldam is currently the External Examiner at the Architectural Association London’s DRL [2023-26] and was the same at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London (2019-2023). She has been a juror and chaired international and national award juries [ULI, Prix de Rome, AIA, SARA, RIBA, Archiprix], and was keynote speaker at important international conferences, and gave a TED talk in 2013 at TED Global. Currently Professor Dubbeldam is on the editorial board of PLAN magazine’s Research Journal [2021-] and was one of the Creative Directors for CityX Virtual Italian Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale [2021& 23].
As the founder/principal of the WBE certified New York firm Archi-Tectonics [1994], Dubbeldam is widely known for her award-winning work, recognized as much for its use of hybrid sustainable materials and smart building systems as for its elegance and innovative structures. Archi-Tectonics' work ranges from residential to commercial, from real to virtual, and is realized in urban & architectural designs, and museum installations. Recently built work includes the 116 acre Asian Games 2023 masterplan with two Hybrid stadiums, a Hybrid Shopping valley and four Earth buildings, and designed to form an enduring legacy beyond the Asian Games themselves. New York projects include the Kyle-Kath Gallery in Chelsea, the Moooi Headquarters, and the Inscape Meditation Studio, which harnesses off-site prototyping and prefabrication processes. Residential work includes the award winning 512 GW building wrapped by an operable "climate skin", V33 condominiums in TriBeCa, and the 80,000sf 497GW mixed-use Building in SoHo and the 200m tall Blaak tower Rotterdam [2020-].
Publications include the recent Strange Objects, New Solids, and Massive Things, (2022) with ACTAR Publishers, Spain, Archi-Tectonics (DAAB publishers, 2010), AT-INdex (Princeton Press, NYC, 2006), and Winka Dubbeldam, Architect (010 Publishers, Rotterdam, 1996). Archi-Tectonics' work has also been published in numerous international architecture and design periodicals, such as the recent UIA World Forum for Architects conference Copenhagen's publication by Springer [2023].
Recent Exhibitions include the recent Venice Architecture Biennale “Strange Objects” exhibit [2023], two solo exhibits at the AEDES Gallery in Berlin the most recent being Flat Lands & Massive Things - From NL to NYC & Beyond (2019 & 2013), and a solo exhibit at the Kunsthall Rotterdam [ 1998]. Several group exhibitions included Archi-Tectonics, such as Unbuilt NY in the Queens Museum, New York (2017), Manhattanisms at the Storefront for Art and Architecture, New York (2016), Built by Women, in the AIANY, New York (2015), and The Unprivate House (1999) at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York to name a few.
Awards include the Best of Practice Award by AN [2024], and the CTBUH excellence award [2023], the Architizer A+ Innovation award [2023], the LUBAN award [2022], 1st Prize National BIM Competition (2020), the Architizer A+ masterplan Award (2020), and the PLAN masterplan Award (2019) all for the Asian Games Masterplan and Stadiums, the SARA award [2024] and the Rethinking the Future award for the 512 GW Townhouse Soho (2020), the IDA Gold Award for the Pearl Dental Clinic [2023], the THA Hospitality award for the Inscape Meditation Studio (2020), and an Honor Award from the AIANY for the 497 GW Building (2015), among others.
