The CPLN 5771 Topics in International Development class traveled to the Penn-Biden Center in Washington D.C., on Friday, January 26 to present their post-war reconstruction proposal for the Ukrainian city of Bucha. Bucha was occupied by Russia for over a month in the Spring of 2022 and experienced immense suffering and loss as a consequence.
Students presented their reconstruction plan for Bucha, Ukraine on January 26 at the Penn-Biden Center.
The class developed a 'Green Network Bucha' plan that leverages Bucha's natural and cultural assets and proposes a network of pedestrian and bike paths throughout the lush landscape. The plan works to memorialize the tragedies of Bucha by healing grief through nature.
Ambassador of Ukraine Oksana Markarova, Special Representative Dorothy McAuliffe, and Deputy Assistant Secretary John Thompson were among the many esteemed guests in attendance. The class was led by professors Genie Birch and David Gouverneur and sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Diplomacy Lab.
