Faircloth, Orr to Speak at PennDesign’s 2018 Awards and Commencement Ceremonies

Frederick Steiner, Dean and Paley Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design, today announced that Billie Faircloth, a partner at KieranTimberlake, will speak at the 2018 Awards Ceremony, and David Orr, Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics Emeritus and senior advisor to the president of Oberlin College, will speak at the School’s Commencement Exercises.

Mellon Foundation Awards $1.533 Million to University of Pennsylvania to Study the Inclusive City

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded a $1.533 million grant to the University of Pennsylvania for a five-year project focused on urban diversity and inclusion entitled “The Inclusive City: Past, Present, and Future.” The project builds upon the Mellon-funded Humanities, Urbanism, and Design (H+U+D) Initiative, a ground-breaking five-year collaboration by the School of Design (PennDesign), School of Arts and Sciences (SAS), and Penn Institute of Urban Research (Penn IUR) that brings together students and faculty to explore cities — past, present and future — examining them at the intersection of the humanities and design disciplines.

PennDesign’s Richard Weller to Deliver “Wakeup Call” for World’s Cities in Kuala Lumpur

A sweeping United Nations initiative titled the New Urban Agenda aimed at improving the quality of life in the world’s fast-growing cities faces a critical test this month when government officials, activists, and academics gather in Kuala Lumpur for the World Urban Forum from February 7 - 13. The gathering is the first time that stakeholders will come together to work out how urban growth can be aligned with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals for the year 2030, as ratified in the New Urban Agenda. One roadmap to achieve those goals comes from Richard Weller, Martin and Margy Meyerson Chair of Urbanism and professor and chair of landscape architecture at PennDesign.

Three students at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design—Rachel Finfer, Olivia Mobayed, and Carrie Sauer—won Women’s Transportation Seminar Awards at the 2017 Awards Banquet on November 30, 2017. Women’s Transportation Seminar is a prestigious international organization founded in 1977 with the mission of supporting women in the field of transportation, and counts more than 6500 members.

With $1.25 Million Alumna Gift, PennDesign Launches $50,000 Student Prize and Professional Medal for Architecture

University of Pennsylvania School of Design alumna Lori Kanter Tritsch (MArch’85) has pledged $1.25 million to establish a $50,000 fellowship for the most promising graduate architecture student at PennDesign and an international medal of excellence for a practicing architect. It is the largest single gift made to the School for fellowships in its 149-year history.

The PennDesign Fall 2017 Lecture Series brings nearly 30 renowned architects, landscape architects, planners, preservationists, historians, data scientists, and artists to Philadelphia this fall. The series opens on Wednesday, September 6, with a talk by UN Studio Founder and Principal Architect Ben van Berkel on the firm’s masterplan for Amsterdam’s Arnhem Central railway station and concludes on Thursday, November 30, with artist Laurel Nakadate.

Ellen Neises Succeeds Randall Mason as Executive Director at PennPraxis

Frederick Steiner, dean and Paley Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design, has appointed Ellen Neises to be the executive director of PennPraxis, the center for applied research, outreach, and practice at the School. Neises is an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at PennDesign and principal at RANGE, a landscape architecture and public policy practice.
