With $1.25 Million Alumna Gift, PennDesign Launches $50,000 Student Prize and Professional Medal for Architecture

University of Pennsylvania School of Design alumna Lori Kanter Tritsch (MArch’85) has pledged $1.25 million to establish a $50,000 fellowship for the most promising graduate architecture student at PennDesign and an international medal of excellence for a practicing architect. It is the largest single gift made to the School for fellowships in its 149-year history.

The PennDesign Fall 2017 Lecture Series Opens September 6

The PennDesign Fall 2017 Lecture Series brings nearly 30 renowned architects, landscape architects, planners, preservationists, historians, data scientists, and artists to Philadelphia this fall. The series opens on Wednesday, September 6, with a talk by UN Studio Founder and Principal Architect Ben van Berkel on the firm’s masterplan for Amsterdam’s Arnhem Central railway station and concludes on Thursday, November 30, with artist Laurel Nakadate.

Ellen Neises Succeeds Randall Mason as Executive Director at PennPraxis

Frederick Steiner, dean and Paley Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design, has appointed Ellen Neises to be the executive director of PennPraxis, the center for applied research, outreach, and practice at the School. Neises is an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at PennDesign and principal at RANGE, a landscape architecture and public policy practice.

Lisa Servon Appointed Chair of the Department of City and Regional Planning

Professor Lisa Servon, a widely published expert on economic insecurity, consumer financial services, and financial justice, has been appointed chair of Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design for a five-year term effective July 1. Servon succeeds Professor John Landis, a distinguished educator who helped maintain the Department’s standing as one of the leading programs in the country.

Weiss, Fullilove to Speak at PennDesign’s Awards and Commencement Ceremonies

Marion Weiss, Graham Chair Professor of Architecture at PennDesign and cofounder of WEISS/MANFREDI, New York, will speak at PennDesign’s Awards Ceremony on May 14. At a public pitch session at the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy on Tuesday, the University of Pennsylvania School of Design’s 2017 iDesign Prize was awarded to Burrow, a modular, luxury couch company that’s poised to revolutionize the way people buy and interact with their furniture. The team behind Burrow includes Wharton students Kabeer Chopra, Stephen Kuhl, Alex Kubo, and Portland-based furniture designer Leah K.S. Amick.

Announcing the 2017 iDesign Prize Finalists

The University of Pennsylvania’s graduate program in Integrated Product Design presents the 2017 iDesign Prize Championship. Five teams led by Penn students will complete for $50,000 to bring an innovative product to market. The event takes place Tuesday, April 18, 6:00pm at Kleinman Center for Energy Policy, Fisher Fine Arts Building, 4th floor, 220 South 24th Street, Philadelphia. The pitch session will culminate in an awards ceremony and public reception; admission is free.

EARTH DAY 1970/2017: A Forum on Global Urbanization, Biodiversity and Policy

To celebrate Earth Day 2017, Martin and Margy Meyerson Chair of Urbanism and Professor and Chair of Landscape Architecture Richard Weller unveils his Atlas for the End of the World, a collection of maps which survey land use and urban growth in relation to the United Nation’s targets. Weller is joined by PennDesign Dean Frederick Steiner, who was among the organizers of one of the first Earth Day events, and Eugenie Birch, Nussdorf Professor of Urban Research and Co-Director of Penn IUR. Birch leads sustainable development efforts for the UN as Chair, UN-HABITAT’s World Urban Campaign, and President, General Assembly of Partners.
