The sculpture facilities support students working across three-dimensional design, material exploration, fabrication, and related media. Spaces are equipped to support a range of processes, from woodworking and metalworking to large-scale construction, finishing, and experimental fabrication to support the diverse interdisciplinary needs of the students.
The Fine Arts Sculpture Studio in Addams Hall provides a flexible workspace for students exploring sculpture through hands-on fabrication and material experimentation. The studio supports general fabrication, introductory woodworking, mold-making, and casting, alongside a wide range of processes for building, shaping, and finishing sculptural work, including access to a dedicated spray booth. The studio is available to students enrolled in Sculpture courses and students majoring in Fine Arts and/or Design.
The Terry Adkins Sculpture Studio in Weitzman Hall is an MFA program facility for sculpture fabrication and material experimentation. The studio supports woodworking, metalworking, and general fabrication, with equipment and work areas suited to both ongoing studio research as well as comprehensive fabrication. Students also have access to a large-scale communal spray booth and a small outdoor work area for experimental processes. The sculpture studio is available exclusively to Master of Fine Arts students.
The Fine Arts Clay Studio facilitates the investigation of clay as a sculptural material and is equipped for hand-building processes, large-scale fabrication, and working with clay alongside non-traditional materials. Earthenware and a limited palette of glazes and cold finishes are provided to students enrolled in clay classes.
The Weitzman Fabrication Lab serves as a practical laboratory extension of classroom theory. The Lab is divided between three main areas: traditional fabrication, laser cutting, and CNC milling/3D printing, and are staffed differently in those three areas. The lab is equipped for all phases of traditional woodworking, traditional metalworking, and machining, as well as digital fabrication with laser cutting, CNC routing, and 3D printing. The lab is available to all University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design students and to all students enrolled in ancillary Weitzman courses.
The Engineering Studios @ Venture Lab are a collection of fabrication labs open to the entire University of Pennsylvania community. The Studios support both curricular and co-curricular projects with a focus on entrepreneurial endeavors and technology commercialization.
