All Degrees + Certificates

PennDesign offers a number of certificate programs which can be pursued simultaneously with a PennDesign master’s degree. Applicants should apply to the certificate program after they matriculate into their master's program. Current PennDesign students wishing to apply to a certificate program should complete the Certificate Application with the exception of the Certificate in Integrated Product Design. That application is available here.

Students from graduate programs across the University may also pursue a certificate at PennDesign and can apply here. The Certificate in Integrated Product Design is only available to PennDesign, SEAS, and Wharton graduate students. The Certificates in Urban Design and in Real Estate Design and Development are available to PennDesign students only. The Certificate in Environmental Building Design is only available to PennDesign Master of Architecture students.

Additionally, some of our certificates can be taken as stand-alone courses of study. This allows professionals to enhance and expand their knowledge of their fields. The exceptions are the Certificates in Environmental Buildling Design, Urban Design, Real Estate Design and Development, and Integrated Product Design. These certificates cannot be pursued as stand-alone courses of study. The application for stand-alone certificates can be found here.

We do not offer financial aid to students enrolled in stand-alone certificates or to PennDesign students pursuing a certificate if this extends the length of their degree program.

For information about each Certificate offered at PennDesign, please follow the links in the left column.

Program Costs

The University of Pennsylvania uses course units as its currency. One course unit equals four credits. All of our certificates require five course units (equal to twenty credit hours) for completion. For tuition rates, fees, and the books and supplies budget for one academic year, please visit our section on tuition and financial aid.

Our stand-alone certificate students typically complete their five course units of study over two semesters, although occasionally and depending on the certificate, they may complete it in one semester. International students cannot enroll in a stand-alone certificate program. International students already enrolled in PennDesign can pursue a certificate at the same time that they are pursuing their primary graduate degree. If this will extend the length of the program by one semester, they should meet with their ISSS counselor to make sure that they are in compliance with their visa terms.
