Furness - Wilmington Station

Frank Furness Wilmington Station Collection (241), Project, 1908

Frank Furness was a Victorian era architect, who designed over 600 buildings in the Philadelphia area.  Furness was known for his eclectic style and use of modern technologies that influenced architects like Louis Sullvan, William Price and Robert Venturi. Among his most important surviving buildings are the University of Pennsylvania Library (now the Fisher Fine Arts Library), the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and his train stations commissioned by the Baltimore and Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Pennsylvania and Reading railroads.

Built in 1907 for the Pennsylvnia Railroad, the station deisgn was innovative for the time as the trains move right through the second floor of the station, with room for a ticketing and retail concourse at the ground level underneath the tracks.  In 2011, the station's name was changed from Wilmington Station to Joseph R. Biden, Jr., Railroad Station.

The collection contains drawings for the Wilmington Train station.
