The initiative is housed in a new multi-use exhibition space located in the Crane Arts building in the Kensington section of Philadelphia that will host a series of public programs in 2018 and 2019.

PennDesign Welcomes New Faculty Members in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Planning; Planning’s Ryerson Named Associate Dean for Research

The University of Pennsylvania School of Design (PennDesign) welcomes four new members of the standing faculty, subject to University approval: Dorit Aviv, lecturer, Department of Architecture; Sean Burkholder, assistant professor, Department of Landscape Architecture; Sophie Hochhäusl, assistant professor, Department of Architecture; and Zhongjie Lin (PhD’06), who joins the faculty as a visiting associate professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning for the fall of 2018. Dean Steiner has also named Megan Ryerson associate dean for research as part of a wider initiative to advance and diversify the School’s growing research agenda.

Architects Tod Williams and Billie Tsien Awarded Inaugural Kanter Tritsch Medal

The University of Pennsylvania School of Design (PennDesign) has selected Tod Williams and Billie Tsien to receive the inaugural Kanter Tritsch Medal. The Medal will be presented at a benefit in New York City on October 15, 2018, along with the $50,000 Kanter Tritsch Prize for an exceptional second-year graduate architecture student, which has been awarded to Alexandra Mae Adamski.

School of Design, Faculty Earn Major Grants from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage for Explorations of Built Environment

PennDesign and two faculty members have been awarded over $500,000 in competitive grants from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. The School earned a $300,000 Project grant with an additional percentage for general operating costs for Design With Nature Now, a trio of public exhibitions which will highlight dynamic and visionary approaches to landscape design and development in the face of climate change and urbanization, scheduled to go on view in the summer of 2019. Ken Lum, professor and chair of the Department of Fine Arts at PennDesign, and David Hartt, assistant professor of fine arts, received Pew Fellowships of $75,000.

PennPraxis Publishes Second Civic Infrastructure White Paper

PennPraxis, the University of Pennsylvania School of Design’s non-profit center for applied research, community engagement, and practice, has published a new white paper entitled Civic Infrastructure: Sustaining and Sharing the Value of Parks, Libraries, and Other Public Assets. The paper calls on practitioners, advocates, funders, designers, and others involved in civic asset redevelopment to think about the unfolding of projects at multiple scales (site, system and policy), over a longer timeframe, through an “ecosystem” lens highlighting the importance of partnerships and governance.

LA+ Journal invites submissions from landscape architects, architects, planners, artists, and designers for the LA+ ICONOCLAST design ideas competition. The competition challenges creative thinkers to reimagine Central Park in the wake of a hypothetical eco-terrorist attack carried out to protest the loss of the world’s forests.

Faircloth, Orr to Speak at PennDesign’s 2018 Awards and Commencement Ceremonies

Frederick Steiner, Dean and Paley Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design, today announced that Billie Faircloth, a partner at KieranTimberlake, will speak at the 2018 Awards Ceremony, and David Orr, Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics Emeritus and senior advisor to the president of Oberlin College, will speak at the School’s Commencement Exercises.
