Brands Earns Inaugural McHarg Senior Design Fellowship
Bart Brands, director and founding partner of the renowned Dutch landscape architecture firm Karres en Brands, has been appointed the inaugural Ian McHarg Senior Design Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design. Over the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 academic years, Brands will lead a series of innovative design activities within the School and beyond.

The University of Pennsylvania will name its School of Design in honor of award-winning designer and footwear icon Stuart Weitzman, Wharton Class of 1963, in recognition of both his ongoing philanthropic support of the University and his active engagement in its academic activities. The new name, the University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design, reflects Weitzman’s enduring influence in the world of design and his extraordinary support of the School.

Today the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy at the University of Pennsylvania presented its fourth annual Carnot Prize for achievements in energy policy to the Honorable Piyush Goyal, India’s former minister of power and of renewables and current minister of railways and coal.
University of Pennsylvania School of Design Partners with Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation
The Graduate Program in Historic Preservation at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design (PennDesign) has entered into a 5-year collaborative research agreement with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to assist in activities leading to the study and preservation of Taliesin and Taliesin West. The partnership will allow students and faculty to engage in graduate studios, internships, seminars, and theses on topics related to the life and work of Frank Lloyd Wright.
PennDesign Spring 2019 Lecture Series Features Pioneers in Design and the Arts
The PennDesign Spring 2019 Lecture Series brings more than 30 of the world’s leading architects, landscape architects, planners, artists, and preservationists to Philadelphia. The series opens on Tuesday, January 22, with a symposium on “Building Resilience by Design.” The schedule includes explorations of the history of Brutalism, the impact of climate change on historic preservation, and the cultural economy of nightlife in Philadelphia.

The series opens on Thursday, August 30, with a panel discussion organized by The Ian L. McHarg Center for Urbanism and Ecology on “Designing the Political Landscape.”
