Welcome Back: IT Info for Academic Year 2024-25

Announcement Date
Tuesday, August 13, 2024 - 9:14

Dear Students,

We hope your summer is going well! As the start of the 2024-25 academic year approaches, Weitzman IT would like to provide and remind you with some important information so that you are ready for the fall semester! If you have any questions or concerns regarding the following information, please don’t hesitate to email ithelp@design.upenn.edu or stop by the 3rd floor IT Help Desk area during normal business hours (9 AM - 5 PM, Monday-Friday).

Accounts

There are two main accounts that you will use during your time at Weitzman.

  • PennKey: Your PennKey is a virtual ID that will be used for access to University-wide and ALL Weitzman IT services. Your PennKey will grant you access to university student resources such as Canvas, Zoom, AirPennNet (Penn’s secure Wi-Fi), LinkedIn Learning, course registration, Student Financial Services, library resources, and more. You will use your PennKey credentials to log onto Weitzman lab (Rm 321 and Rm 324) and public computers.
    • **PennKey Self-service password reset (SSPR): Please be sure to enroll in this service in case you ever need to reset your PennKey password.  Enrolling in this service will greatly reduce the need to contact support for this process.  You can enroll using this link: https://accounts.pennkey.upenn.edu/pwm/private/updateprofile
  • PennO365 Account and Email: Your PennO365 account includes your email account and is created for you after you choose your PennKey. This account shares a password with your PennKey. This account should be provisioned already.  If not, please contact ithelp@design.upenn.edu

Note: Beginning Summer 2024, legacy design AD accounts (previously used for computer access, file server, printing, etc.…)  are no longer being used.

  • Access to ALL Weitzman resources will use your PennKey credentials ONLY!
  • Legacy design AD accounts will still be available for continuing students until September 30, 2024 for you to download any data you might still have on the student file server (Juno). Instructions on access are available here: https://www.design.upenn.edu/it/remote-access

Two-Step Verification

Two-Step Verification is a required security feature for both your PennKey and PennO365 account. If you haven’t enabled your account for two-step, please visit the Penn WebLogin Two-Step Verification portal and select "Enroll Now." Please follow the instructions on-screen carefully. If you have an Android or iOS smartphone, we strongly recommend downloading Duo Mobile (Apple | Android) and enrolling in Duo Push, which will allow you to authenticate regardless of cell service or Wi-Fi signal.

Computer Recommendations

It is essential that you bring in a laptop that can handle the demands of your department. This will impact on your productivity and workflow as you progress in your department and field of study. We have worked with Penn-preferred vendors to configure laptops at academic pricing. You can find details about configured laptops, including a link for purchase and department-specific information on our Computer Recommendations page.

Software

Information about applications including Adobe subscriptions can be found on our Software page.

Sophos: The university offers a complimentary subscription to security software which can be used on up to 10 devices!  Full details available here: https://www.isc.upenn.edu/how-to/sophos-home

Designify

The Weitzman IT Services team has created an onboarding process for you that we call Designify.  This Canvas Course covers topics that will help you prepare your personal computer for the academic year, including a review of accounts, resources, security, and applicable software access. You will be enrolled in this Canvas Course and can access it with an active PennKey. Please go here for more details. If you have difficulty accessing this course, please email ithelp@design.upenn.edu and we will make sure you are granted access.

Computer Labs

Meyerson 321 and 324 computer labs are available to graduate students 24x7. Authentication is with PennKey credentials. These computers labs are primarily used for teaching but are available as an added resource for students to use. The schedule of use is posted outside the rooms and available online. We ask that you be respectful of this space and leave the area tidy as this is a public space available to all students.  Be sure to log off any device when finished using.

Printing

All information regarding access, available devices, media types and costs can be found on this webpage: https://www.design.upenn.edu/it/printing-scanning

LinkedIn Learning

The University offers LinkedIn Learning to all Weitzman students free of charge. Tutorials range from introductory to advanced level on a range of topics, skills, and software. This is a valuable resource you will have access to while you are actively enrolled at Penn. Take advantage!
