Erwin Anton Gutkind Collection (056), Architect and Planner, 1886-1968
Erwin Anton Gutkind, received a diploma in architecture and a doctorate in city planning and engineering from the University of Berlin, and had a professional practice in Berlin focused on housing. In 1956, he came to the United States to take up the position of research professor at the University of Pennsylvania. He became a senior research fellow in the Institute of Environmental Studies and produced the multi-volume International History of City Development, originally projected as ten volumes.
The collection contains materials related to Gutkind’s professional practice in Germany, photographic materials related to International History of City Development, and writings by Gutkind. The collection does not contain manuscripts of International History of City Development or materials related to his personal life.
